Inter-Provincial Limited Overs Tournament

Dimuth Karunaratne guides Wayamba to victory

 


Opening bats Dimuth Karunaratne scored a half century for Wayamba, as they beat Ruhuna by five wickets in the Inter-Provincial Limited Overs Tournament match played at SSC, yesterday. Ruhuna, deciding to bat first, collapsed and were all out for a mere 196. Wayamba reached the target for the loss of five wickets with 16 balls to spare. Chasing the paltry target, Dimuth Karunaratne stood tall for Wayamba, scoring a match winning innings. He managed to equal the highest score of the tournament, but fell three runs short of a century. Facing 126 deliveries, he stroked nine fours before he was run out by Chamara Silva.

Earlier, Ruhuna winning the toss decided to bat first, but they lost wickets at regular intervals. In form opening bat Sanath Jayasuriya managed just 5 runs. Skipper Upul Tharanga was the top scorer with 45.

Wicket-keeping batsman Dinesh Chandimal captained Wayamaba due the absence of Mahela Jayawardene.

Kandurata, Ruhuna and Wayamba have already secured their semi-final spots, while the winner of today’s game will also make it to the semis.
